Monday, March 17th-21st...The Student Leadership Council has selected this week as our Wealthy Spirit Week!  There is much fun to be had!

• Monday:  St. Patrick's Day (wear green!)
• Tuesday:  Pajama Day (we will been having a 1st grade fun morning with reading, reading, reading in celebration of reading month!)
• Wednesday:  Dress Like Your Parents Day
• Thursday:  Crazy Hair Day
• Friday:  Favorite Sports Team Day

Math news...In math this week, we began looking closer at addition strategies and deeper understanding of our math facts:  particularly doubles, doubles +1, +10, and +9.  

Doubles and doubles plus one

• If you know doubles rule (6+6=12, 7+7=14, etc), than you will know that 6+7=13, since it is one more than the doubles fact of 6+6.  This is called the "doubles +1 rule." 

Making ten 

• If you know the pattern of numbers plus 10 (10+1=11, 10+2=12, 10+3=13), than you will know that numbers plus nine (9+1=10, 9+2=11, 9+3=12) is one less than the "10 rule.

We are learning the meaning of these addition sentences.  It is important to have greater understanding of number sense as well as memorizing math facts.  You can help at home by working with your child in mastering these math facts quickly (especially doubles, doubles +1, +10 and +9 addition problems).  Using flashcards, math apps, etc. can help develop the quick skill of memorization.  This will help later with calculating larger addition problems as well as multiplication.  Thank you!
