Today we mixed our first graders to have three different stations, focused on Martin Luther King, Jr's message about peace. The relevance of peace in our school, classroom, home and heart are the most understandable for our young learners. We have defined peace as having a big heart to help others, get along with others and problem solve by talking through issues. Each student at Wealthy Elementary has a Dream Keeper box that is kept at school for the duration of their time at Wealthy. This is the first year that kindergarten and 1st grade students are participating in having Dream Keeper boxes. Each year, the goal is to acquire an artifact from our lessons about Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message as memories and reminders of the importance of community and kindness. Today, we received our boxes, talked about Martin Luther King, Jr's big heart, created puzzle pieces and put puzzles together symbolizing our classroom uniqueness and community and sang many songs about peace. Our puzzle piece will be placed in the boxes as a symbol of our working together to become one community. On Monday, we will be participating in a walk around Wealthy Elementary which symbolizes our unity as a school community of working together and including everyone. We will have an assembly immediately afterward to celebrate our school community and talk more about Martin Luther King, Jr's influence on our country.

Coming up...
*Tomorrow we have NO school, due to teacher's records day. Next Friday, you will be sent home a link to view your child's report via Skyward. There will be no paper copies sent home with your child this year.
*If your first grader is a Wonka Candy Kid, they will begin practicing on January 27th from 3:30-4:30.
*We will have our first swimming Thursday, February 6th from 2:00-3:20pm. Our second (and last) swimming day is scheduled for Thursday, March 13th from 1:15-2:20pm. There will be an instructor from the EGR Parks and Recreation Dept. as well as a lifeguard on deck. I will need a few parent volunteers to help during this time. In particular, I will need a father to volunteer to make sure all our boys successfully make it out of the locker room safely and back in to get dressed :). If you are interested in helping out for one or both of the dates above--you do not need to get in the water (!)--please let me know! Thank you!
Have a great 3 day weekend!
