Descriptions of our First Grade Curricululm


Reading- Individual, small group, and whole group instruction as well as reading instruction integrated into the social studies and science curriculum. Lessons include instruction in word work, phonics, decoding strategies, elements of books, genres, research skills, fluency and comprehension.  Students are read to, they read together, and they read alone.  Visit www.starfall.com for games. 

Writing-  Students are taught many forms of narrative (small moments), informational and opinion writing through writing workshop.  We write as a group with shared writing, as well as individually.  

Spelling- No excuse words, word families and phonetic word patterns make up our spelling program which is practiced throughout our day.  There will be no formal spelling tests. Visit www.spellingcity.com if you would like some computer type spelling activities to do at home. 

Handwriting-  Handwriting Without Tears www.hwtears.com

Math-  Our math program includes number sense through 110, place value, addition and subtraction facts to 20, addition and subtraction story problem solving and writing, time, money, measurement, fractions, and geometry. Students are taught in large and small groups.  Check out www.harcourtschool.com for grade level games.  First graders will be doing homework through the IXL.com program.  You will get a user name for your child and password. 

Science-  The scientific process is taught through the study of life cycles, properties of matter, and weather. 

Social Studies-  We learn about the four areas of social studies:
Economics, Geography, Civics, History

Spanish-  Instruction occurs 4 days/week for 20 minutes from 1-1:20pm with reinforcement during the day with Senora Harmon (Visit her Spanish website here).

Specials
Art, Music, Gym will be on Wednesday afternoons this year right after lunch. *Please keep a pair of shoes and extra socks at school for gym.

Recess-  Morning recess from 10:15-10:30, afternoon recess from 2:00-2:15.  We also have recess before lunch at 11:27-11:55.  We have indoor recess when it rains or when temperatures are below 0 degrees F. 

Recess/Lunch- 11:27-12:13

Snack- 10 AM mid-morning snack

Homework- Leveled books will come home most evenings beginning in October and need to be returned the next day unless indicated.  You will be getting an IXL computer assignment and occasional extension sheets of social studies.  Homework should be around 10 minutes each night. First grade homework should to be a time when parents are actively engaged with their child.
