27 February 2014

As we look forward to March, one thing that is not changing is our our weather!  Lucky for us, since we will be experimenting with water as a liquid and as a solid (snow/ice) next week.  Then, it is allowed to thaw (although not likely).  And so we must push on, even though the polar vortex has not, with a new IXL calendar for March, our Wealthy Willy Wonka show, swimming on March 13th (Thursday) and the Scholastic Book Fair.

Showtimes!  Showtimes!  Showtimes!  Willy Wonka will be showing Thursday (7pm), Friday (7pm) and Saturday (2pm) of next week.  We will attend a school performance on Thursday afternoon for all students to see!  We will also be able to watch Charlotte's Web, by the Children's Creations group, at the end of March.  On a side note, my 3rd grader, Anabel, is an unnamed Lost Boy in Lakeside Elementary's Peter Pan, showing during the last week of March.  If you are interested, it will be a fun show to watch as well.

Swimming!  Swimming!  Swimming!  Tess's mom will be joining us for swimming--thank you, Katrina--which means we need only one more volunteer...A DAD to join us!  Because our first graders have to change in the locker rooms, we need to have a father join us to make sure all of the boys get out of the locker room ready to go.  Plan on 1:00-2:30pm that day.  Please let Rachel Farrell or me know if you can join us.

Book Fair!  Book Fair!  Book Fair!  There is an online Scholastic Book Fair from March 2-22nd.  All books sold through the Wealthy link will give credit to our school to buy more books and other supplies.  The actual Scholastic Book Fair will be set up in the library from Sunday, March 9th-Thursday, March 13th.

Writing!  Writing!  Writing!  Your writers have been writing informational CHAPTER books the last few weeks and are nearly complete!  What an amazing transformation these writers have made.  I am looking forward to sharing with you all of their accomplishments at the end of March/beginning of April during parent/teacher conferences.  More information on that coming soon!

Reading!  Reading!  Reading!  During our reading workshop time in the morning, one of the stations that all of the 1st graders participate in is reading books from their book boxes (which are at their level).  Our station time has progressed to 20 minutes, which means they are reading for 20 minutes straight!  We have set up a class graph to mark our time for the month of March (plus the last two days of February).  Today, since we have 5 groups, we read for a total of 100 minutes when the groups added their times up!  We are having fun predicting how many minutes that will add up with an entire month of reading.  We LOVE big numbers!

Math!  Math!  Math!  We celebrated the 100th day of school on Monday by comparing pennies vs. unifex cubes, writing about what we want/don't want 100 of, and making 100 steps around our school.  We used our 100 steps to get to Mrs. McKee's room, but now want to try a different way.  Look for our footprints on the wall next Monday!

Thank you, in advance, to Dr. VanDeven, Carter and Clara's dad, for coming in tomorrow--Friday--to teach us more about keeping our teeth clean and healthy.  Also, an advanced thank you to the VanDeven family for donating "mystery fish" to our classroom!  We will be able to ask a lot of questions, make observations and watch these little guys grow!  They can keep Turbo Blossom company (who, by the way, is still going strong--although not active since this is his hibernating time).
