Due to our snow day, the rehearsals for the Wonka Candy Kids Chorus will need to be adjusted.

Also, very important things to send on 2/24 and 2/25:  snack and colorful shirt for costume.  Please label the shirt with your child's name.  Have your child memorize the song over the winter break.  If you want the music you can buy it at itunes for $.99-It is Omnibus Media Karaoke Tracks Kids Musicals,  The Candy Man.
Thanks!

Thank you in advance to Shannon Iakiri for organizing our Valentine's Day party tomorrow!  The party will begin at 2:30, you are welcome to come!   We will be having a shorter party so that we can open all the wonderful Valentines at the end of the day.

Literacy news...we practiced our new song...When two vowels go a'walking, the first one does the talking and it always says its name... Of course, we end up talking about those words that seem to always break the rules, but the majority of ee, ea, oa, and ai words follow the double vowel rule.  Identifying vowels in words, whether it's short or a long vowel, silent e or double vowel, can help many readers figure out those difficult words.  We are writing informational teaching chapter books and will be making the finishing touches on them in the next few weeks before we move into our persuasive unit.  We were focusing on comparisons this week.  If you have a moment to walk through the hallway, you can take a look at our Mr. Morey comparisons for principal's week.  We hold him in high, HIGH regard in our classroom :).  They are very cute.
Math news...we are swimming around in shapes, making new shapes out of smaller shapes, building their spatial intelligence.  In the next week, we will focus on symmetry, directions (left and right), open/closed shapes and the 100th day of school (Monday, the 24th)!  We will provide 100s of fun things for the students to do, you do not need to send anything to school that day.
Science news...we experimented with sinking/floating today as an attribute to sort objects.  So far, we've sorted by shape, size, color, texture, weight, flexibility, magnetic/nonmagnetic, and now sinking and floating.  We will start different states of matter when we return from break.
Swimming news...WANTED: Volunteers to enjoy the swimming (and locker room) experience with first grade cuties.  Please contact me ASAP if you can come on March 13 (Thursday) from 1:00-2:30.  We need you!

Have a fabulous long week, enjoy the Olympics and travel safe if you are leaving town!  The teachers have professional development days next week, one of which our 1st grade team will be at the Van Andel Institute for science enhancement.  It's always exciting to learn new things!
