Our apple exploration day was a great success! Thank you to Emily, Katrina, Rachel and Sue for helping out in our classroom making apple diagrams! Your 1st grader made apple cider with Mrs. Sawade and her cider press, taste tested apples and graphed the results with Mrs. Hitchcock and listened to the Red House with No Windows and No Doors story and discovered a star inside an apple with me. We finished the week by learning more about the life cycle of an apple (from seed to tree to apple) and imagined ourselves like Johnny Appleseed, planting fruit trees across our land. Ask your 1st grader what their nickname would be if they could be like Johnny Appleseed (and plant whatever fruit tree they wanted:).
Our expert of the week this week was Brady Ross! Brady taught us all about hockey, showing us his equipment and putting on his gear. Very impressive, Brady! Thank you for sharing with us!
We also welcome Ms. Briana Dalton, an education student from Aquinas college, who will be joining us on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Ms. Dalton is a sophomore at Aquinas, with a major in Spanish and minor in Early Childhood. She aspires to be an early education teacher. She will be with us until her semester ends in the middle of December.

Our Field Trip to the Fulton Street Farmer's Market is on Wednesday, October 23rd. We will have a scavenger hunt, looking for different goods/services terms throughout the market (consumer, producer, scarcity, goods, etc). Your child will be purchasing a pumpkin and an apple as a consumer :). PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY WITH YOUR CHILD. You have already provided field trip money at the beginning of the year and this trip is covered with the $15 that you have already sent in. Thank you to Rachel, Sarah M, Shellie, Katrina, Kelly and Samantha for volunteering for this fun trip. I am sending home information with your child (just for the parent volunteers) today to give you an idea of what's in store for you :). Please plan on arriving with your child Wednesday morning and staying with us at school until we depart at 8:45am. All of the 1st grade students will be taking the bus together and we ask that you meet us there in your car. We will be meeting back up together at the market at 10am to board the bus. You may leave from the market and do not need to return to school. Thank you in advance for your help! This will be a fun morning!
Picture retakes are Thursday, Oct. 24th. Earlier this week, a note was sent home from Geskus Photography explaining that their quality and standards were not up to par for the first round of pictures. If you would like retakes, please return your package on or before the 24th and they will retake your child's picture at no additional cost.
Our Halloween party sounds like it has taken off and will be very fun! Thank you to those that confirmed with Sue Rosmarin in providing supplies and helping out (and big thank you to Sue!!). We will have an early recess at 1:45 that day. If you would like to come at this time at help with costumes, you are more than welcome. Recess will end at 2:00, with our Wealthy school parade beginning at 2:10. We will begin our party as soon as we come back!
Parent Volunteers for next week:
Thank you to Emily Backus, Samantha Cornell, Amy Strand, and Sarah McKenna for volunteering next week! Please let me know if these times do not work for you. Please check the calendar on our blog http://millersfirstgradewizards.blogspot.com/p/classroom-volunteers.html to check your dates/times that you have volunteered for. Your help is greatly appreciated! I do have many things to cut/create. If you indicated that you would like to work on these types of projects, please stop by after or before school and I will load you up :). Thanks again!
We began collecting spare change for the Hearts of Gold campaign this week. This year’s Hearts of Gold- Playing for Health and Happiness – will benefit The Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan. In order to bring this awareness to an elementary level, we will have two buckets in our room to collect donations with this slogan: We know pets fill our buckets. Which warms your heart more - Dogs or Cats? Let the friendly competition between cats and dogs begin :). The campaign ends October 25th.
