What a wonderful first week we have had!  Your first grader is bringing home an orange FRIDAY FOLDER today.  Even though we have done many, many, MANY things this week, there is only one paper coming home...their heart dot-to-dots from the first days of school.  They were so proud of the hard work that they put into their designs, that I wanted to make sure they are safe and sound at home :).

We've been working together as a TEAM this week to get to know each other.  Wealthy Elementary's motto of "TEAM" stands for Taking responsibility, Everyone safe, Always respectful, and Making a difference.  You might notice these signs in the hallway and in our rooms!  In our classroom, we developed three main rules for our classroom to follow these guidelines:
  • I will be nice to others.
  • I will be nice to property.
  • I will be nice to myself.
This week and next we will spend more time coming up with examples and ways we can follow these lifelong rules.  With this group of sweet first graders, they naturally do these things already!

In science...this week we also investigated 5 turtle eggs, coming up with amazing observations and questions.

In math...we began an introduction to math by exploring our different manipulatives and getting used to switching in groups for math stations.  We will always begin our math time learning as a whole class with an introduction to a new skill, game or concept and then break into math stations so that I can meet the needs of our first graders at their levels.

Each Friday afternoon, we will have creation station time at the end of the day.  Creation station is a time for your child to build, create, invent and socialize with their peers.  It's a time that I can visit with them one-to-one and help facilitate working together and problem-solve in a more relaxed, safe environment.  You might have seen some creative inventions come home today.  If you have toilet paper/paper towel tubes, old magazines, scraps of fabric, rinsed out plastic recyclable items...anything that looks like it could be used for creations, please send them in!  I have a cupboard just waiting to be filled!

Coming up next week...
We will begin literacy stations in the morning.  During our 1st grade Information Meeting on Tuesday, September 16th at 6pm, I'll explain a little more about how these will work as well as other parts of our learning days, volunteer sign-ups to work in our classroom, field trips as well as answering any questions you might have.  Please save the date (and make plans to come to the meeting without your children).  I'm looking forward to seeing you then!

We will be taking YEARBOOK pictures on Thursday.  If you are interested in purchasing pictures and/or a yearbook, please send in their picture money by Thursday.

Enjoy the first weekend with your official first graders.  Please spend some time snuggling and reading a good book together!

A final thought...
