If you haven't heard the big news of the classroom, we have turtles! We've been watching them the last two days as they are beginning to hatch out of their eggs. We've made scientific drawings using the document camera to view the turtles up close on our big screen. We are predicting and asking tons (TONS) of questions (How long will they take until they are out of their shells? Are they asleep? Is it a boy or a girl?). Soon we will be making "claims" to answer these questions as we learn and read more about turtles. This is all part of the scientific process, which we are learning in such a natural way. Big thanks go to Mrs. Sawade for bringing in turtles to all the first grade classrooms. Such a tremendous opportunity!
Thank you to the parents that could make our 1st Grade Parent Night on Tuesday. I appreciate your support, comments and emails so much. If you have any questions about anything anytime, please let me know!
Looking forward...
All-school reading club...Mrs. Gallavin, our reading specialist, sponsors a reading club for all students. She has a monthly drawing for special prizes. Please click on the attached link for more information: Mrs.Gallavin's Reading Club.
IXL Math jumpstart...we will not begin IXL until October with a calendar of specific topics to cover in the 1st grade section. If you and your child would like to explore IXL, you can log in and test those mathematical skills with the kindergarten section (it should be a great ego-boost). Your child's username is his/her full first name and last name (no spaces and all lowercase), password: math. Enjoy!
Volunteering in the classroom...as promised, here is my link to the sign up form: Volunteer Sign Up Form for Mrs. Miller's classroom. Please sign up for specific days/times that work for you. I will be contacting you to let you know when and how often you can help (depending on how many volunteers we have). I would like to start volunteers to first full week of October (beginning October 6th). I will be posting the volunteer calendar on our blog so that you can access it anytime.
**If you have not filled out the EGRPS volunteer consent form for the district, please do! You MUST fill this out and be approved (background check) before helping in the classroom. If you need the form, please click here Volunteer Consent Form (for the district). Thank you in advance for your time and support. It is so greatly appreciated!
Please keep reading to your child each and every night. Chapter books or series are fun to start because they keep their interests peaked. Please do not forget about those beautiful picture books. They have more advanced vocabulary and sometimes more complex story lines than many chapter books. Inside those books are small moment stories that can spur connections to your child's life. What great teachable moments to get them into writing their own stories about their lives!
